What is an orthodontic retainer?
Orthodontic retainers are custom-made devices, made usually of wires or clear plastic, that hold teeth in position after surgery or any method of realigning teeth. How many types of retainers are there?
Orthodontics retainers can be classified into 2 main categories; removable and fixed retainers.
Removable Retainer
There are two types of removable retainer; clear retainers and wire retainers.
1. Clear Retainers
They are often known as Essix retainer, made from a transparent, medical-grade thermal plastic. They are custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth. Since they are clear and virtually almost invisible, this makes them an aesthetically pleasing choice, especially for those who are concerned about the appearance of their retainers. Furthermore, they are generally comfortable to wear since they have smooth surfaces and are less likely to cause irritation or discomfort. Additionally, they can help prevent teeth grinding at night. At Bangkok New Smile, we have our own dental lab that can process your clear retainers only 3 hours after your teeth impressions are taken.
2.Wire Retainers
They are one of the most common types of retainers made of a stainless-steel wire that wraps around the front teeth and is anchored in a molded acrylic piece that fits against the roof of the mouth (for upper retainers) or behind the lower teeth (for lower retainers) keep them in place. 3.Fixed Retainer
They often known as bonded retainer, lingual retainer or permanent retainer. They are made of a thin wire bonded to the back of the 6 – 8 upper or lower teeth depends on your dentist’s opinion. Since they are bonded to the back of your teeth, this makes them Invisible and has no effect on the appearance of your smile. However, this type of retainer retains only your frontal teeth, your dentist might recommend getting clear retainer to wear with fixed retainer to prevent teeth relapsing. Keep in mind that they are unremovable so they require extra attention when it comes to oral hygiene.
